In the 1940, during World War II a British Warplane crashed into the sea about a Kilometer off Katuneriya, Negombo. A fisherman who was on a "Theppama" (a type of traditional fishing boat) rescued the pilot and brought him ashore.

Today we are with Vincent, the son of the fisherman who made the rescue. As soon as Vincent anchors his boat we gear up and plunge into the calm sea.

This is a twin reef system. One a natural mound of rubble and the other a smaller debris field of what's left of the plane. Both are covered with lots of fish life. Huge swarms of Cardinalfish envelop the engine and the fuselage area of the plane. Lionfish, Porcupinefish, Fusiliers and Goatfish inhabit the natural mound.

The inshore proximity of the dive site means that the visibility is not good. But its an ideal place to find small things such as Flounders, Nudibranch and for those who love Lionfish; there is no better site!
